Looking back at K1 WGP Final 2010

Yesterday was another thrilling night in which we
saw numerous hard fights. Some with actionpacked
knockdowns, others with nerve-racking decisions.
Some fighters did what we expected from them, while others showcased a skill level which was more than we could hope for. In the end I think we can look back at a good tournament, which proved that no matter what financial state FEG is in...the fighters will always deliver no matter what!
Give us your thoughts on the night. What`s your opinion on the fights. What were the highlights, the surprises, the dissapointments perhaps and of course the upsets?
IMO Saki showed he is definitely one to be careful of in 2011. I hope his arm heals quickly and I hope we can see a rematch between him and Overeem, since the smaller Saki was doing great until the injury took over.
Spong was also awesome! Not only did he survive..he even wobbled the big guy in R1. Is he finally living up to the expectations? Looks like he is!
Kyotaro survived three rounds and even without a knockdown. Which is either a great achievement by him or a lackluster performance from the man who killed the competition last year..
Ghita was good and he showed it. But Saki was more hungry. We haven`t seen the last of Ghita I think. He talks about retirement, but I see no reason for it. Those midkicks were evil!
Aerts disposed of Mo like we thought he would. Only not by lowkicks but good old fashion Lumberjack highkicks! And remember this is Mighty Mo, the man who never goes down! ....except against small Thai men and old folks ;-)
And of course IMO the highlight of the night the repetition of Aerts performance of 2008..or even better, since Schilt had no idea what to do anymore in R3 and even his stamina was decreasing, something very rare when looking at his previous fights.
Overeem looked less sharp than he did against Edwards, but it was enough to score a knockdown against Spong and get away from an extra round. The fights after that were easy due to tournament issues, allthough Saki tried his best and those spinningbackkicks landed nicely.
Would have been out of this world to see Aerts get one last title, but Overeem showed he was the face of 2010 and now holds two belts, which is a great great achievement! I would have prefered seeing him fight Schilt, that would make it easier for me to be happy for him. Since he now spoiled my Aerts party haha ;-)
Your thoughts??

Well written Rob - i appreciate that. It was a great Tournament. I haven´t expected those high values of fights. Especially fighters like Spong and Saki made it exiting to watch. Aerts? It´s all said before - the rise of the phoenix :-)
But i found Alistair (and of course Semmy) sometimes looked a little bit helpless without the two handed clinch. It´s like you´re taking away the best toy of a kid. And i can´t understand that Ghita is thinking about retirement? Does anybody knows more about it? Why?
At MMA Forums people talking about how coult it be that there are so many injuries in only one tournament? The answer is - the fighters of the world GP 2010 gave it all for the fans. Thank you very much - this tournament in 2010 got it all:
Blood, sweat and glory :-)

Good thoughts, Rob. I agree on everything. This was
a very good Final 8.About the retirement of Ghita: I dont think so. He seems to have said in an interview some time ago: if I win the GP, I will retire.
So, he has got some unfinished business.

I think Schilt lost motivation this year.. well he
can do so, he won 4 times , though he was clearly
very sad in his post interview, he was not the
Schilt than back in 2009 when hungry for revenge.
I think next year s gonna be a VERY strong year
with EVEN more hunger and motivation now, to take
away the title from Overeem. I m sorry this years
wgp is over.. so i m happy for the Showtime gala
and also, i hope there will be some nice fights at
the dynamite. Rob, very nicely written why didnt you post it as an exclusive? Although my intention also was, to create an article where we can discuss things, i see them going on further in many current forum threads :) but it s ok the more the better :)

@Rob Totally agree. For me, the 2 most surprising performers were Tyrone Spong and Gokhan Saki.
Fighting Overeem with one arm is astonishing.
And Aerts - Schilt 2010 was the fight of the night.

Peter Aerts, was BRAVE . is the only one fighter,
that makes Semmy too tired, took all of his power
and let him out. i never believed that could be
possimbol from Aerts. BRAVO , that fight will
remain in history !

@Rob I have nothing to add because
you said it all for me. This was an nervwrecking
event with great fighters that showed "heart",
"power" and "glory". Just love it! Best tournament
in the world in my opinion! Thanks you FEG! Thank you Aerts, Saki, Ghita, Spong, Alistar, Schilt and all K-1 fighters for taking part of this. Looking forward to 2011!

@szanpan Thnx for your comment. Maybe next
time I`ll make a proper article. These were just a
few thoughts on the tournament in order to open up
a review/discussion of the event. What I like the most is that a lot of people thought this Final would be predictable...including me. But it turned out to be one awesome event. And that`s what it`s all about in the end :)

Same here. No need to respond, since rob said it
all. Perhaps he could have added that I was one of
the few who predicted saki as thr winner. :p

Oh Yes You all forgot something! The difference
between the fighters this year was as close as
never! I mean guys like Kyotaro, Spong, Ghita,
Saki, Aerts ... really have chances to win the
whole when everything runs perfect for them. I
can´t remember a tournament when all fighters
(except Mo) fight on that high level and are able
to compete each other! That was the big problem
with Semmy. It was boring cause I just hoped
someone can compete and everything went like
everybody thought. So I think K1 is as exciting as before Semmy, especially with Hari for Mo next year and maybe Gerges for Kyotaro.
I just loved the tounament and I can´t for the next events!

@Stuttgart Yes
you are right.Although I havent been bored by K-1 the last few years.
Even with the supremacy of Schilt, I found K-1 exciting. A lot of people are/were complaining about Schilt, complaining about always the same fighters, etc ... But, I just love K-1. Not every fight is spectacular, but in general, this sport is just great.
But maybe it will get even better!!! Wooow!

@D-rop Yes, Schilt has one good
thing to add.He is not getting better himself.
But he forces others to do better.

I feel like the level is rising in K-1 again. With
the exception of zimmermann perhaps, I think all
the important fighters have performed excellently.
And Schilt is hard to beat even when he has a bad
day...

I see everything is already said! But what about the reserve fight, Teixeira-Zimmerman... What the f*** is wrong with Zimmerman, he gained a few pounds, like Ive never seen him before, and he keeps losing from guys he shouldnt lose from!
But on the other hand, Teixeira keeps improving himself (just like Saki and Spong) he is really fighting good now!
