Description

Francois Botha, also known as Frans Botha (born September 28, 1968, in Witbank) is a South African boxer, nicknamed the "White Buffalo". He is a former International Boxing Federation World Heavyweight Champion and the current World Boxing Foundation World Heavyweight Champion.

Pro Boxing Career

Botha, known for his great courage and big heart, has had a relatively distinguished career as a heavyweight boxer, having fought several world heavyweight champions including Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Axel Schulz, Michael Moorer, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Botha suffered a fifth round knock out to Mike Tyson, whom he had been beating up until that point.

Botha had a victory in 1995 against Germany's Axel Schulz to win the IBF World Heavyweight Championship, but later tested positive for the steroid nandrolone [1] he and his camp claimed to be prescribed by a doctor for an arm injury. The result of the fight was then changed to a "No Contest" and Botha was stripped of the title.

"The White Buffalo" bounced back with a courageous effort with Michael Moorer for the IBF crown on the undercard of Mike Tyson's first contest with Evander Holyfield. Moorer knocked him out in the twelfth round. This eventually led to fights with Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, and heavyweight title showdowns with Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Botha came up on the short end via knockout in both of those encounters for the heavyweight title.

Four months after the Klitschko fight, Botha fought distinguished contender Clifford Etienne, and knocked him down twice, but was denied a victory and received a majority draw with two judges scoring it 94-94 and one judge scoring it 95-93 in favor of Botha. This was in Etienne's hometown.

K1/Kickboxing & MMA career

From 2003-2006 Botha participated several times in the kickboxing combat sport, K-1. His current K-1 record is 2-10, with the two wins coming against K-1/Kickboxing legends Jerome Le Banner and Peter Aerts. Botha's final K-1 match was a 3 round decision loss to Jorgen Kruth on May 20th, 2006 in a K-1 superfight in Stockholm, Sweden.

Botha also had one mixed martial arts fight. On December 31st, 2004 he lost to Yoshihiro Akiyama via an armbar submission in the first round.

On October 14th, Botha beat Espedito Da Silva by KO at Africa Bomba-Yaa.

Botha made a return to kickboxing in 2008. On March 30th, 2008, Botha defeated muay thai kickboxer Kaoklai Kaennorsing at The KHAN in Seoul, Korea by decision. He lost to French kickboxer "Le Gentleman" Gregory Tony at WFC 6 on September 27th, 2008 in Bulgaria.

Boxing Comeback

In July 2007, Botha returned to boxing with a unanimous decision victory over Bob Mirovic in a fight held in South Africa. Botha dominated the fight with two judges holding Botha won all twelve rounds and one judge ruling he won ten of twelve. The bout was for the interim WBF World Heavyweight title.

On February 6th, 2009, Botha beat Ron "Rocky" Guerrero by unanimous decision for the vacant WBF World Heavyweight title in South Africa. He successfully defended his WBF title against Timo Hoffmann on May 15, 2009 in Germany, winning the fight by split decision.

Personal

He currently resides in South Africa with his wife Elsje and two children, Marcel and Cecelia-Ann. Botha has his own trading company called Hired Hands now.

Trivia

Botha appeared as a selectable fighter in the PS2 games Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing in 2002 and K-1 World GP 2006 in 2006.

I'm a big Frans Botha fan. I was really glad to see him win the vacant WBF world heavyweight boxing title this past friday. His profile could certainly use an update.

Wow Cecelia-Ann, you really Frans Botha's daughter? That's awesome! Do you have any cool stories or anything you'd care to share? I would love to hear anything you have to say about Frans...

Well Frans successfully defended his WBF title against Timo Hoffmann in Germany last night, he won by split decision. So im definitely happy about that being a White Buffalo fan and all. I'll go ahead and update the profile to reflect that. Frans knocked Hoffmann down in the 11th and from the sounds of it nearly knocked him out in the 12th, which is impressive because Vitali Klitschko couldn't knock Hoffmann down, and he's also the only opponent in Vitali's 37 career victories that Vitali didn't stop. So that was awesome on Botha's part, what he did to Hoffmann.

Congrats on your father's victory Cecelia-Ann, hope to see you post here again soon. Maybe update us on what's next for him. And thanks for the previous update Kim. Later.

I never thought that K-1 was the right forum for Botha, but I must say that I was impressed by him when he fought Jörgen Kruth. He must have taken more then 60 rock hard low kicks to his front leg, and eventho he could hardly stand up he still contiued to fight back. Respect!

The best K-1 community online!

The focus is on building a community that offers more to the users than any other K-1 website. The focus is also on that the community should be totally user driven, with the users as main writers of content. Who would for example write a better fight report than a fan who actually was at the fight? Or who could write a more interesting fighter profile than the fan who loves and really knows about a fighter? We believe that this approach will lead to that fansofk1.com has the most interesting K-1 information.
