K-1 Las Vegas 2007 Weigh-Ins
In a ballroom deep within the labyrinthine Bellagio in Las Vegas, all participants in tomorrow's 2007 WGP in Las Vegas presented for weigh-ins. It was perhaps a needless exercise, given that the K-1 WGP has no weight limits, but it was informative none-the-less and another opportunity for K-1 to showcase its fighters before the assembled press. Also present were K-1 notables like Michael McDonald and Gary Goodridge, and sports commentators from the American martial arts world including Stephan Quadros and Frank Trigg.
The weigh-ins opened with the announcement that Las Vegas book makers had shuffled their favorites, and were now expecting Alexandre Pitchkunov to win (2 to 1 odds), with Rick "Savage" Cheek a close 2nd (5 to 2 odds). He also announced that Ray Sefo (-260) and Mighty Mo (-105) were the favored fighters in there superfight matchups with Bjorn Bregy (+210) and Stephan Leko (-115)
All fighters were successfully weighed and squared off for the cameras (see below). Those in attendance were also able to see Zabit Samedov and Mahmud Fawzy for the first time (neither had been in attendance at yesterday's press conference). The audience was also treated to seeing the lovely Ardra "The Mexican Machine Gun" Hernandez from the television series, "Fight Girl," and Cung Le protégé, Van Do, who will be fighting tomorrow at 115 lbs.
Perhaps the only break from the routine at the weigh-ins was when Rick "Savage" Creek elected to strip down to his fight shorts before climbing on the scale, much to the delight of the thirty-some Creek- supporters that filled the ballroom. Highlighting the futility of the weigh-ins, most fighters had to be reminded to take their shoes off before climbing the scale.
When asked about the changing odds for the tournament, Rick "Savage" Creek was characteristically nonchalant, again offering his praise and respect for the other tournament competitors, and denied any jitters going into the tournament. Regarding his match up with the monstrous 310 lbs Imani Lee, Creek explained that, "I'm not really worried about the size difference, I've been training with a guy that's 350 lbs, so I'm used to big guys."
Saekson Janjira, the Muay Thai champion and trainer of the other highly touted American newcomer, Esh' Chada "The Dispossessor" Brown Ton, was also in attendance at the weigh-ins. When asked about difference's in Brown Ton's training for the K-1 tournament, Janjira explained that nothing had been changed. He explained that the academy's training was well suited for K-1 rules, focusing on punching and kicking, not knees and elbow strikes. Janjira also gave a clue of Brown Ton's future plans, revealing that Brown Ton had been training in jui-jitsu for many years and was considering an entry in the US MMA scene.
Parcipating the tournament's reserve fight, Mahmoud "Mo" Fawzy was an impressive sight on the scales at 6'5" and weighing 224 lbs. Fawzy explained that just four weeks ago he had quit his job as a security guard in order to train full-time after being notified by K-1 that he'd be fighting this Saturday. He explained that his tenacity and willingness to fight would be his greatest strength tomorrow. And when asked if there was any discordance with this fighting spirit and his easy smile, he replied, "No way, just look at Sefo, that guy's always smiling!"
