Semmy Schilt Claims Glory Grand Slam Crown

from Liverkick.com, written by Dave Walsh

Schilt

A picture says a thousand words and Semmy Schilt was able to hold onto the top spot in Heavyweight Kickboxing as he wins his fifth major Kickboxing tournament with a win over tough challenger Daniel Ghita. Daniel Ghita and Semmy Schilt were the favorites heading into the event and it was no surprise when both men found themselves standing toe-to-toe in the finals. This was a rematch from 2010 where Semmy Schilt was able to dominate Ghita to take a decision victory in the K-1 WGP Final 16 and since then Semmy has aged and Daniel Ghita has evolved into a more complete fighter.

Schilt's night included knocking out Brice Guidon, taking Rico Verhoeven to a decision and going the distance with Gokhan Saki while Daniel Ghita never quite looked like himself as he struggled with Jhonata Diniz and edged out Mourad Bouzidi who fell victim to a freak accident. Things turned around for Ghita when he knocked out Jamal Ben Saddik with one kick to the gut, leading into the biggest fight in Heavyweight Kickboxing today. The Finals started off with both men feeling each other out, Semmy fighting like Semmy and Ghita getting off a few good shots before a huge head kick connected from Schilt and Ghita went down like a sack of bricks. Ghita looked stunned but pulled himself up and looked composed before referee Joop Ubeda decided to call the fight in a controversial decision even though Ghita was fine and we usually see Finals go until only one man can stand.

Schilt walks away with the $400,000 USD grand prize and Daniel Ghita gets $100,000 as a consolation. No doubt that Schilt had a good night and deserves his due, but there are going to be a lot of questions surrounding Joop Ubeda's decision to call the fight that early.

Respect for sem,

Saki deserved a third round, but the freak of nature wins again.

Very disappointed by Remy. He has even forgotten what little he knew about using the hands in a fight.

BOOO, F R E A K!

happy
The event was nice and entertaining with so many surprises. Saki was great. Ghita got some difficulties to adapt at the beginning. Sammy was ... Sammy. Zimmermanhas never convinced me that he was a great fighter. Bonjasky is ... history. Aerts is ... a symbol. BenSadik was a surprise. Verhoeven ... who is this guy anyway :)) ?? etc

Four fight in a row in one night is too much. This is why they tried to repair it somehow by introducing these new rules : 2 minutes rounds and 2 rounds won is wining the match. This took away from the matches's beauty as the fighters needed new approach.

I hope I will see more Glory events in the future and I ' m sure this is the beginning of something GREAT in kickboxing.

@ ronaldo the new rule setting i agree it SUCKS BIG TIME !!!!!!

Semmy shilt is a BEAST period dus not mather if people think he fights boring ...
its effectif thats what counts Plus how can you be bored when he constantly uses
sublime timed front kicks high kicks the man uses his size in a Perfect way.

Followed along with his killer ko jab i only know 2 fighters who can make a ko with a jab and thats Semmy and the Klitcko brothers.

But Glory really needs to change that best of 2 rounds BULSHITT cus its taking away a lott from the fight (i get it they want to force more ko,s and tko in this way)
Cus younger fighter wil go ape from the first round now.

But that zimmerman fight BOY a 3th round would be freaking fireworks cus
yes sadik knocked him down twice ...But zimmerman came back and
almost tko the guy in teh last 10 seconds ...a 3th round would have bin great :)
im sure zimmerman would have turned the fight ..

Sadihk vs bonjasky same thing (im not saying remy fough good) but come on
those blows wide swings where all blocked They did had a lot of power behind them because remy was being tossed around the ring like a ragdoll (witch made him look weak ) . so that sadik won the fight based on the first 2 round .. so no 3th round needed . i mean WTF thats bullshit so a fighter cant come back now in the final round
and pull of a suprise ending by tko or ko or decision .

Plus rounds of 2 mins i mean come on thats just saying get in the ring and jump on your oponent from the first second ... the more technical or patient fighter are being
put in a disavantge

(but besides that... Remy his performance was weak to i espected him to use his athletic skills such as jumping knees and turning it into a kick in the last moment)

The real remy would never ever just stand infront of a big guy and let him take swings
like i said in a other article the fire is gone out of remy he should have bin more active against such a big static type of fighter like sadik use his high kicks jumping kicks
but not just stand infront of the guy :(

The fact that Ghita toke care of sadik with one kick says alott (not taking away the fact that ghita is a dangerous fighter)

I agree with rishi! schilt has a verry excelent techniq, he is the only giant fighter who lands highkicks :) live kicks and all kind of kicks, it does not look so nice, but he does everythin correct. Aerts is the only one who was a real danger to him, and badr !! respect for sem !!!
