WGP Interview: Alistair, Saki, Spong!!

Alistair Overeem

Q: What's your condition like now?
A: It's good. I am 100% other than being a little bit hungry now.

Q: Do you have jetlag?
A: We arrived yesterday, but I am fine.

Q: What sort of training have you done since Korea?
A: Well, my normal conditioning routine and pretty much normal training.

Q: What do you think of Tyrone Spong?
A: I don't have any impression of him.

Q: Who is your main rival?
A: Semmy Schilt. He has won the WGP 4 times, so I would say he is my biggest rival.

Q: There are 3 Golden Glory fighters in the WGP. What do you think about it?
A: It is unique. We are the only team in the world like this. I think we are the strongest team in the world in both MMA and K-1.

Q: How do you feel about fighting your team mate?
A: For me it is no problem. If it happens I can guarantee it will be a war.

Q: K-1 is using you to promote the event this year. How do you feel about it?
A: The TV shows were great and it was a lot of fun. Hopefully there will be more in the future.

Q: How do you feel fighting in Japan?
A: For me it is very natural. I love Japan. I love the way of life. I have been coming here for 11 years. I really love it here. Fight here means everything to me. If I am not here for 3 months I start to miss it, so I am just happy to be here where I can show the fans my skills.

Q: You are something of a leader in K-1 these days...
A: It is unexpected of course coming out of MMA, but I am honored. I can promise to the fans, it will be a great show.

Q: What sort of fights do you want to show in the WGP?
A: I always go for the knockout, so this time won't be any different. I don't fight for points.

Q: Are you planning to eat sushi before the fight?
A: I will eat it as soon as possible. I hope this interview will finish quickly so I can go eat.

Q: Please give a message to your fans.
A: To all the fans, I'm going to show you K-1.

Q: What size is your bicep?
A: It's big. I think it is like 47cm or 48cm a month or so ago.

Q: How much do you weight now, and is there a difference when you fight MMA?
A: In MMA the weight is a bit less as the rounds are longer. Right now I am about 120kg.

Gokhan Saki

Q: How do you feel right now?
A: My condition is good like it always is.

Q: I think you had a great fight in Korea. Do you still feel like you're riding that wave?
A: Of course. It was a good fight for me. Just 2 weeks later I fought in Amsterdam. I feel good, and I feel confident.

Q: Is there any difference between you now, and in the past.
A: No. I train all the time, so the only difference is I have gained a little bit of weight.

Q: What do you think of Ghita?
A: He is a good and strong fighter. He has good low kicks. I like to fight good technical fighters like him as I am a similar style fighter.

Q: Did you increase your weight so be more competitive with the heavyweights?
A: Yes. I needed to have some more power. Before Korea I lost 3 or 4kgs before the fight from spending a long time in Thailand. This time I spent less time there and I am at 104kg without having lost any speed.

Q: What do you need to be careful of when facing Ghita?
A: No. I don't care about his skills. He has nice technique, but nothing I care about.

Q: You are both famous for your low kicks. I guess it is going to be a damaging fight for both of you...
A: If it goes 3 rounds then we will both be hurting. I am planning to knock him out though, so I won't be damaged.

Q: Who do you see as your rival in this tournament?
A: Of course it is me. Everybody talks about Alistair and Semmy, but what about the rest of us?

Q: Well, the fighters you mentioned are team mates. How does it make you feel?
A: I don't care. I did everything I could to make it here, so I will knock them out. Otherwise they will hassle me every day about how they beat me, and I don't want to hear that.

Q: I've heard the Turkish fans are looking forward to this tournament, right?
A: Of course. It will be on TV the same night there, and I think many people are excited for the event.

Q: Is K-1 a popular sport there?
A: After football, I think fighting sports are the most popular.

Q: Please send a message to the fans.
A: Hello everyone. This is Gokhan Saki. Don't miss the tournament or you'll miss the crowning of the new 2010 WGP Champion. Me!

Q: Do you feel that you'll be the one that changes the face of K-1?
A: Of course! I think K-1 was born again after the last Final 16. There are a lot of strong fighters now around 25 that are really peaking. You won't see the Ernest Hoosts and Peter Aerts fighters for much longer.

Q: When did you first know about K-1?
A: When I was about 13 I saw it in TV in Holland.

Q: Why did you start training?
A: I was always playing football. Most of my friends also started kickboxing, and I was the only one only doing soccer. I went there to watch only once when I as 11, and I fell in love with it

Tyrone Spong

Q: What's your condition like now?
A: Very good. It is the Final 8 so you'd have to be stupid to come in bad condition.

Q: What's your opinion about the attraction of the press to your opponent?
A: He is so big it is tough to miss him. I don't care about it.

Q: Did you do any specific training for face Overeem?
A: No, I just worry about my own shape and my own condition. Right now I am in good shape and I'm just looking forward to fighting on Saturday.

Q: What do you think his weak point is?
A: I know Alistair well. We trained together for 7 years. Everyone has strong and weak points. I think I have seen enough weak points to give me the edge and win the fight.

Q: What kind of fights do you plan on having in the WGP?
A: I'm just focused on the first fight, and then I'll see. It is a tournament, so anything can happen. All I can do is focus on my first fight.

Q: Are there any other fighters you're looking at beside your first opponent?
A: I'm not focusing on any of the fighters. I'm just making sure I feel good, and that I win.

Q: Do you consider yourself one of the new generation fighters?
A: I think it is time for change. We're called the new generation because some of them are getting too old now.

Q: Please give a message to the fans.
A: To all the fans, please watch this Saturday and support me. I feel good and will go for the championship, so please watch me do it.

Q: Has your trainer, Ernest Hoost given you any specific tactics for this fight?
A: Firstly, I train with 2 trainers. Ernest is one of them. This time I also trained with Harry Hooft. As for Ernest, he is one of the real champions. He won with his skills, not with size. As for tactics of course I have them, but I don't want to tell you. You'll need to watch on Saturday to see if I'm successful or not.

Q: What do you weigh now?
A: About 104kg.

Q: Did you increase your weight?
A: Yes.

Q: Recently you're always shaving your head. Is there any reason for it?
A: No, I always like my hair like this. When I wake up it is easy just to wash and go out.

I think Overeem vs Spong will be the best fight of the tournament. I am almost giddy to watch that one :)

I honestly think Overeem will win it.

I agree whole heartedly. When I said I think reem will win it, I didnt mean just that one fight, but I honestly think he will it all. He sounds ready, has the tools, the confidence and has that killer instinct.

The best K-1 community online!

The focus is on building a community that offers more to the users than any other K-1 website. The focus is also on that the community should be totally user driven, with the users as main writers of content. Who would for example write a better fight report than a fan who actually was at the fight? Or who could write a more interesting fighter profile than the fan who loves and really knows about a fighter? We believe that this approach will lead to that fansofk1.com has the most interesting K-1 information.
