Interviews with Stefan Leko and Peter Aerts

We went backstage at IT`S SHOWTIME 43 to talk to some of the fighters and get you some interesting interviews. Our videoreport is coming online soon. Until then enjoy these two interviews we had with K1 superstars Stefan Leko and Mr.K1 himself Peter Aerts

Interview with Stefan Leko

As we find our way backstage through the dressingroom area, we can see all the fighters preparing for their fights. Some are getting last minute instruction, others are warming up on the pads and some are receiving a final rub down with Thai oil. Several big names are on the card tonight and you as the fans had the opportunity to post your question for these participating fighters.
Every lockerroom has nametags on the door to show which fighters are getting ready inside. The first fighter we encounter is K-1 veteran Stefan Leko. Eventhough we haven`t seen Leko in the K-1 ring lately, that doesn`t mean he`s been taking it easy. With numerous fights in Eastern-Europe and of course the IT`S SHOWTIME events, Leko has been very busy trying to show why he is one of the best. His trainer is busy wrapping his hands before he puts on his gloves. We ask him if he has time for an interview. "Of course", the blue eyed Blitz replies.

Stefan you are still fighting a lot. Yet we miss you in the Finals. You still seem to have the skills to keep up with the topfighters. What`s your opinion on this?

Yes I love to fight and I want to be in the Finals. My last two fights I won, everything went very well. A few years back I suffered a leg injury and since then I had to take it easy, but now I am coming back stronger. I can still compete with the best.

Was this the same injury that hurt you in the ArenA last year against Melvin? Because you were doing very well then.

No that was another injury. Not my leg, but my foot. It was swollen like an egg and I had to stop.

Every fighter gets older. Do you have the idea this is influencing your performance?

No, I even feel better now. More relaxed and more experienced. I have never felt this good, so my performance will be even better.

Have you changed your training in some way? Do you focus more on other parts now?

No I stick to the same style.

We haven`t seen you in K1 for a while now. Do you think it has anything to do with the K1 at this time with all the financial difficulties. They organize less and less events nowadays.

The K1 is going down a little bit. They used to have events every two months, then in Europe, then in Vegas. But this year only one event. So yeah I hope they have more money soon. That means more events and more fights for us.

IT`S SHOWTIME announced they will be organizing their own tournaments now. Wouldn`t you rather fight in those events?

I think the Japanese have had it a little with all that fighting, I mean 17 years, every year..PRIDE, K1, I get the idea the people are sick of all the fighting there. They need a rest and all the stuff is moving to Europe now. Europe is more into kickboxing now.

Do you see IT`S SHOWTIME taking over K1?

Taking over is a bit too much, but yeah take over Europe yes. I think Golden Glory and IT`S SHOWTIME events are now..how do you say..the basis for kickboxing in Europe.

Is there still a fighter out there who you want to challenge? Perhaps a rematch or just someone you haven`t fought yet?

Actually I want to fight everybody. I say yes to every fighter.

That`s very good to hear. Thank for this interview and good luck with your fight tonight.

You`re welcome.

And we hope to see you again.

Thank you.

Interview with Peter Aerts

Not only do we encounter fighters from the line-up that night, we also see some familiar faces backstage who just came to watch the event and wish their teammates goodluck. One of these men is the Lumberjack, who you all know as Peter Aerts. In his grey trainingsuit, he looks like he just got back from the gym just to watch a few fights that night. Cheerfull as ever, you can hear his laughter from across the hallway as it surpasses every other sound. Aerts came to wish his Chakuriki teammember Hesdy Gerges goodluck in his fight against Rustemi Kreshnik. We seize the opportunity to ask Mr.K-1 a few questions concerning some of the rumours we heard about the Final 16.
He agrees, but only if the questions aren`t to difficult. You see, he explains, he`s been hit on the head quit a lot in his career.. And he once again fills the backarea with his trademark laughter.

Peter good to see you here!

Yeah I always like to visit these events and see how everyone is doing and of course watch the fights (laughs) I`m having a good time.

We heard rumors you received a wildcard for the Final 16. Can you confirm this?

Yeah but they had to, because there have been no real qualification tournaments this year.

And without qualifications there are no fighters in the Finals.

That`s right, but I would have been there one way or the other.

That`s why they call you Mr.K1.
Do you know who you`ll be facing that day?

Teixeira. It was recently announced.

We heard some rumors, but know we know for sure.

Yeah we`ve known it now for two ..maybe three weeks.

So what do you think about your opponent?

He`s a strong you know, physically strong guy. He seems to be able to take a lot. But I know I will be able to take him.

Have you got a certain tactic in mind?

Yeah use a lot of combinations. He`s a karate fighter originally, they often don`t have that good of a boxing background. So lots of combinations with arms and legs.

Sounds good and we can`t wait to see you in action then.
Thank you for this interview and have a great evening.

Thank you too. Osu!

The best K-1 community online!

The focus is on building a community that offers more to the users than any other K-1 website. The focus is also on that the community should be totally user driven, with the users as main writers of content. Who would for example write a better fight report than a fan who actually was at the fight? Or who could write a more interesting fighter profile than the fan who loves and really knows about a fighter? We believe that this approach will lead to that fansofk1.com has the most interesting K-1 information.
