Evolution 21 John Wayne Parr vs. Bruce Macfile
Evolution 21 took place yesterday in Australia and the main event featured something of a surprise result.
In the final fight of the night, Bruce "The Preacher" Macfie defeated John Wayne Parr via split decision. Both Macfie and Parr are longtime veterans of the Australian Muay Thai scene, and have been the clear #1 and #2 in the 70-72kg division for some time. But it's always been clear how they rank against each other - Parr at #1, Macfie at #2, a ranking helped by Parr's two previous victories over Preacher. Now, Macfie has turned those rankings on their head with this win, which has to be considered something of an upset.
A 17 year veteran of the sport, Parr has been looking like he's starting to wind down his career as of late. He's far from done, scoring solid wins in the past two years against names like Mike Zambidis, Eli Madigan, and Lamsongkram, as well as dropping a very close fought decision against Buakaw. But Macfie is an opponent most thought he would be able to handle, and the loss here may solidify that his reign at the top of the Australian ranks is coming to a close.
Macfie too has been looking a bit slowed down recently, but has now scored back to back impressive victories in Evolution, as he took out Eli Madigan at Evolution 20. This win has to feel great, and is a real feather in his cap.
While video is not yet available, some reports are indicating that the decision may be a bit questionable. I have read that Parr is unhappy with the decision, and could file a formal challenge. Once video footage shows up, we will be sure to share it so you can judge for yourself.
In other Evolution results, K-1 Oceania competitor Cedric N.T.G. defeated Eric Nosa by split decision, and Michael "Tomohawk" Thompson stopped Wayne Martin in the 4th. I really have liked what I've seen of Thompson lately, and look forward to seeing this fight, as well as watching his continued development.
