Blame it on a UFC

With all this talk of FEG going under, I just want to emphasize why hate of the corporate world is not totally irrational.

First of all, I must say i hate math.It has always been a troublesome science for me, all those numbers, graphs and formulas. But that doesnt mean I cant do the math if I need to.Being in business for a 18 years now, when I sit down to "Do the math", it means that things are not going very well. And that is what FEG should done long time ago.How did it started?

None other than the UFC with their money. If you organize the event where sold-out arena cannot cover the fighters purse, that means that you have got some other serious sources of revenue. And they do.PPV, clothing, expos, magazine, reality show everything.Army of lawyers protecting their interests, against fighters, other promotions, and anyone else who steps on their toes. They are cruel, but they pay. A lot. Almost every fighters dream is to fight i the UFC.They had resources and they had the money, vision and knowledge to estblish UFC as a leading MMA brand. And they not intend to stop.

FEG on the other hand, was like a Japanese WW2 tank commander, carrying his katana inside the tank even if it prevents him from escaping once it starts burning.Depending on pricey tickets and Japanese fighter cheering sections.NOW they remember to offer T-shirts?Wow!Let me see...At 17E a piece, they just need to sell 100000 of those and they almost got half the money needed.Cmon.

UFC raised pole with high fighter purses. They did not do it because they love fighters but to ensure that they will have it their way.Others had to follow, but without additional sources of revenue they were doomed.Remember all the fuss about Affliction and UFC few years ago?I don know the ehact figures but imagine how much money only clothing brings on the table?Boy did we got some good fights at those two events! But it folded UFC reckoned it is in its best interest to stop the clash, and bring Affliction brand back in.They are GOOD in what they do.

But their finished product, the UFC event has got heavy corporate smell that bothers me and many of us here. You do have to say "Harley Davidson the only...", every time, "Bud Light the difference is...", those girls have to wave their hands in same way every time, fighter has to put T-shirt after the fight...Now laugh all you want, but I briefly worked for "Disney".If asked for a direction on a "Disney" asset you MUST show it with THREE fingers or else 10% of your salary goes. After three warnings you are out.Thats one of the easy rules to follow, and there is a full manual of conduct. Therefore I sympathize with every fighter in the UFC.Getting into Octagon is only half of it.I hate corporate world!

But  the money is good.(if you dont mind making monkey out of yourself). So the corporate world wins.Coca Cola , Microsoft,  UFC...

What FEG desperately need is not only money. They need LOTS of money and someone with enough vision to turn it into profitable corporation, and for us fans that would mean the end of K1 as we know it.I would definitely not start with 17E Tees.

1.TV-rights.Why the hell do they not sell those all over the world locally, instead of delayed broadcasts and scarce satellite , and internet players. You have to be a real fan to watch.Lets face it, New Years Eve TV program sucks.Everywhere.Big time.If I would know that I can expect Dunamite!!! on my regular TV program instead of some crappy 80s movie, I would be bought. How many national frequency televisions only in Europe?I am not even talking about PPV in North America.Lower the price, at least for a first few years!Prepare the ground by providing at least one fighter from each country you plan to sell event to to participate.Money made that way would surpass ticket revenue several times, and thats just a first step.Make a Dynamite!!! 1 for Europe and USA a day earlier, and Dynamite!!! Japan on Japan NYE and broadcast in rest of the world day after.Imagine that, instead of Vienna boys Choir...

2.K1 established itself as a premium stand up fighting brand, and they seem like its irrelevant.Push that forward!Organize events!Make something like a open K1 "back to the roots" qualifier, something like a Strongman competition in the USA , reality show in different countries, based on original idea one style versus another, karate versus boxing etc..Do not change the established rules to save one fighter from getting beat up!Let it go!

3.Clothing and stuff.Who designed those?Tanikawa?Fine tune the product line and prices before releasing them onto the market, better yet market them together with some premium manufacturer like Adidas or Nike. That way you will get less critic for being expensive.

4.Last but not least, let go of the Japanese market dependence! That is what brought you down in the first place.Start thinking internationally.Hire a capable manager, and guess what, it doesnt have to be Japanese. If you go down it would be your own fault.

Small update:I have just read that James Toney received 500000$ for his fight with Couture. One fight! And what fight was that...
K1 champion receives 400000$ as a grand prize...After beating three of the top fighters all SAME evening. No wonder they all want to go there.

Wow...nice article

FEG only has itself to blame. A decade of poor marketing has caught up to K-1. The is no standup fighting on tv here in North America. As much as people complain as the U.S. market goes so does the world tv market. Globally the UFC is attepting to dominate the combat sports market.
If FEG/K-1 would hire a professional marketing company they should have a market. A great number of MMA fan boo and jeer when fights go to the ground.

Here are my suggestions for K-1/Standup

1: Have 6 world wide tournaments early in each calendar year. This would create 6 event champions. Allowing for 2 wild card spots in each final. Then run a championship night. To make for a greater number of events run events in three weight divisions. This would make for a total of 21 events a year.

2: Realize that the world does not revolve around the Japanese market. Open your eyes the globe is much smaller. Market to the entire planet. You only need look at the difference between the Japanese web page and the English page to see a major problem.

3: Promote your fighters as the best in the world and pay them as such.Fighters should not have to wait to be paid for months . They deserve to be paid quickly. Maybe if the top fighters saw a reason to be in K-1 they would not need to fight elsewhere.

4: Work with other stand up organizations to have the same goals and one world champion. For too many years I have seen tiny alphabet group callings thier guy a world champion. Most fans just want good fights.

5: Please give us live televised events. On tv not internet. With so many cable sports channels looking for programming surely there is a deal out there somewhere.

6: Fire the people at the top. They are horrrible at their jobs.

isnt this what they were taliking about with the PUJI deal and such? and the k-1 japanese website DOES listen to fan requests, just use google translator and paste your concerns onto the "contact us" thing. it will work man. FEG is going to pull through. they have the heart and soul of martial arts. its gonna be alright. ufc has no soull.

@torazulu the toney purse is an aberation. most fighters never earn anywhere near that. in actuality the ufc rips of there fighters because they can get away with it.

The best K-1 community online!

The focus is on building a community that offers more to the users than any other K-1 website. The focus is also on that the community should be totally user driven, with the users as main writers of content. Who would for example write a better fight report than a fan who actually was at the fight? Or who could write a more interesting fighter profile than the fan who loves and really knows about a fighter? We believe that this approach will lead to that fansofk1.com has the most interesting K-1 information.
