Gokhan Saki interview

GOKHAN SAKI believes he is the fastest heavyweight kickboxer in the world - and is
hoping his six-year pursuit of a rematch with Badr Hari will finally bear fruit after knocking out the Moroccan's team-mate Melvin Manhoef in sensational style.

Saki may have to wait a while longer for the contest he craves, as hot-headed Hari has announced he is taking an indefinite break from fighting to "set some things straight" following his disqualification defeat for kicking Hesdy Gerges in the face while he was down.

Saki remains hopeful that a return with the fallen former It's Showtime heavyweight champion will happen sooner rather than later however, and is more confident than ever he can avenge his rib injury retirement defeat from their 2004 encounter when it does.

Razor-sharp and with knockout power in both hands and feet, Saki first told Fightnewz.net he wanted to get to grips with Hari again two years ago after stopping Paul Slowinski.

And after producing the performance of the night to demolish Manhoef in two rounds before Hari had his meltdown at the annual It's Showtime event in Amsterdam, a return looks one of the most appetising matches that could be made at the moment.

Saki says he has both the speed and temperament to topple Hari, who seemed to tire after unsuccessfully trying to take out resilient Gerges with heavy punch combinations.

"I'm the fastest heavyweight in the world - 100% - and I want to fight Badr Hari," he said.

"It's time to fight him - I want my rematch.

"He is the best and he is popular but I know I can beat him and I want to take his place.

"That's why I want to fight him and I'm confident I can beat him because I train hard and I'm a tactical fighter.

"He fights like Melvin Manhoef. He goes 20 seconds on full power and after that if you make good pressing you are going to win the fight for sure.

"It's about tactics - not just fighting. Like when I fought Manhoef - it's about controlling your emotions."

Saki is of the opinion that Hari - who was also disqualified in the 2008 K-1 World Grand Prix Final for stomping on the head of a downed Remy Bonjasky - committed his latest foul against Gerges because he was frustrated and beginning to gas out.

The Turkish-Dutchman said: "It's not nice what he did. I think Badr was going to win but he was tired, so that's why he made that action.

"I'm a fighter too, I know these things. It's not good what he did."

Saki has always been renowned for his fast reflexes but looked even quicker than usual in his devastating three knockdown victory against slugger Manhoef, his fourth in a row since rebounding from an injury-affected 2009 which included three consecutive K-1 losses.

The 26-year-old nicknamed 'The Rebel' added: "I train with light guys and heavyweights - I train a lot of time for explosion and that's why I'm so fast.

"A lot of people thought he was going to knock me out, but I know I'm faster than him.

"I felt good on the day. I trained good and I wasn't nervous."

@szanpan i believe Saki is the best -95 KG fighter around. I Don`t like to see Saki fighting big guys like Hari or Schilt, i know He is better than them technically, but the size disadvantage will make things harder. So i wish he stays at It`s Showtime, cuz there is a 95 KG MAX division (which belt is holded by Tyrone Spong - who he has already beaten)
imagine a 95 kg max gp next year with names like: Saki, Kyotaro, Spong, Karaev, Samedov, Morosanu, Zhuravlel, Manhoef, Corbett, etc etc
take anybody of them vs Anybody and you have a great fight

Yes Burim absolutely right, and i guess if there were more big guys like Badr and Sem Schilt also FEG would be thinking to divide the two.. but like this, it would be ridiculous to do as there would be only 2-3 people who would fight only which would make the whole completely boring. Yes weight and heigh difference does count a lot and yes thats why Saki will not be able to beat those guy among dozens of other fighters and yes he is indeed now one of the strongest fighters in his category. Wish to see great fights of his in the future

@szanpan well, actually there are lots of guys Badr`s size, just to name some: Bonjasky, Zimermann, Overeem, LeBanner, Gerges, Teixeira, Ghita, Balrak, Kemayo, Guidon, Ignashov

i think FEG needs to divide these two categories, but they obviously are not interested in something like that (they have troubles to even pay their K-1 MAX champion, leave alone organising another GP). But i hope at It`s Showtime, they have 6 divisions and by the time they will grow the roster and the dream might became true

@burim I would love to couple of more categories in K1. They don`t have to divide heavyweights, just add one category between max and heavyweight.

How did you write your comment with apostrophes?

Never mind. I just figured it out. We can use the other apostrophe.

Le Banner will be out in a few years as i see, Ignashov might decide anyhow, but now he is injured so he is out. If Overeem goes back to MMA, and if Bonjansky will not be able to keep up with fighting then it s minus 4 people IN THEORY of course, then means would only 7 people plus Schilt and Badr still not enough to make the division because no final 16 not even final 8 how could they make it to last a whole year?
I m sorry they have financial problems, and i do not see the reason why, as also last year as i see the arenas were full of people, and they do not see the tickets for tree, i think the only problem is that the Max is weak to make good income and Dream virtually almost doesnt make any. If they would be able to get some good future champs in these 2 then would make the organization strong again. Which i hope

@szanpan Last few years K1 tournaments in Japan were held at the arenas that can accommodate 15,16,17 thousand people. Before that there was 50,60,70 thousand spectators. Just because you see that the stands are full doesn`t mean that there are many people watching it. I don`t know why Japanese stopped coming to K1 events
szanpan (2088 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-03 at: 12:29
i think because most of them come beacuse of Badr only and mainly. Aerts is how he is now, Le Banner he is old. The others are not that entertaining, neither that spectacular. The need for new stars and personalities is quite desperate I think. In Max there was Masato, in WGP there was Musashi. Both are out so now there are not that many big fighters from Japan, i think they start to get bored also about the same people all the time, especially from final 16. I m sorry the exchanged to smaller stadiums, K.1 would need some more stars

cool
@BukiLand That is because you dont know anything.
Most of us are K-1 fans, not (only) Hari-fans. A few years ago, Hari was still a boy, not fighting anyway, and K-1 was fantastic!!

So there IS a show without Hari.

@BukiLand ur welcome man...but as you see even in this interview saki says about hari:
"He is the best and he is popular" in my opinion i think shows like "its showtime"and GP fans are more excited on seeing the best then the rest(no offense to no1)

@D-rop lets go back to the original question:saki will be the last one to win against hari and he needs a miracle to win,end of discussion........
Mitko J. (1210 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-04 at: 10:37
@sam Im not so sure about it and I think that Badas style has become very predictable and that Saki could beat him, because Saki acts out of courage, and hari out of...well, cowardice (no need to explain that for a hundredth time already, right?). Against Gerges it was more than obvious: go into havoc waving his fists without any plan or control until he gets tired, if he gets him-he gets him, then take a breath or two, and same again - no thinking, no strategy. last time I saw him do a good fight, where he was actually thinking, was against Zimmerman. Saki might never be able to take on Schilt or Overeem, but Im very convinced he could beat Bada, and not just beat him but humiliate him.
sam (167 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-04 at: 11:09
@Mitko J. come on man,its impossible,saki cant beat guys like hari,overeem,semmy,bonjasky
they are too strong for him..and dont follow the others who say badr gets tired, badr will be tired.....blablabla,just like he never won a 3rounds fight????lets dont go far,the best exemple is his fight with ignashov,he won that fight very easily,i believe if he fights the same way he fought ignashov and keep that control he will be unbeatebale for a while........sorry,but badr can only lose to fighters like semmy,overeem...but saki are you kidding me????

sam,he was almost losing to domagoj something.so,start being realistic before people here starts thinking that you are a teenager.

and i definately think saki has a good chance against to hari.he is fast and technical and strong enough to catch hari with a good shot.and thats end of it.im not saying for sure but he has a really good chance.
but yeah, unfortunately i dont see any chance for him against semmy.

again the same problem that i my comment is not accepted by the system..
szanpan (2088 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-05 at: 10:06
ok i wrote a long comment which the system doesnt accept so i gonna make it short.

Badr failed against Gerges because he didnt know much about his fighting, they made a plan which was false and ultimately with false ending. I think this is called misconception.

Saki: Badr has fought against Saki, also he is also in K-1 so Badr knows his style very well. thats why i think Saki would still not have chance against him.

i hope this time the sys accepts my comment

@conan81 come on hater, thats why Domagoj didn`t knew if he was in Zagreb or Seoul after just 10 seconds

on topic: Saki would beat Overeem much badly than Lidell beat him

@burim Watch that fight again. For first couple of seconds Hari too didn`t know if he was in Rabat or in Auckland

Posted: 2010-06-05 at: 11:49
ok everyone, the fight had that ending that Ostojic was on the ground !!! why suddenly looking for other endings of fights? Then there are so many with which we could do but what would be the point of them? What happens if Remy stands up or what happens if Ruslan stands up? We could go on forever with these!!!! Ostojic was clearly not the man to beat Badr but he had one and only one hit not more because he was on the ground. I think you say Badr was left standing because of the ropes ? We saw many fighters, even your favorites who survived an attack the very same way. So please do not start with this " what could have happenned" cycle talking about things which never actually happenned.

And no Burim I do not think Saki is heavy enough to harm Overeem even a bit . Sorry mate i like Saki too but please let us be realistic on his skills. Maeda won over him for God s sake !

@stark Badr got HIT
Domagoj got HIT

Badr was CELEBRATING the WIN
and Domagoj was saying: Huh. i slept alot, Where i am now? Why so many Hawaians in Zagreb ?

@szanpan Maeda would have NEVER WON, if Saki WASN`T TIRED AS HELL, after 4 CLOSE TOUGH CRAZY ROUNDS with Tyrone Spong
szanpan (2088 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-05 at: 12:02
yes lucky guy Maeda and i do not fight him a specially good fighter at all, that why i was shocked that he won Saki, and yes we can tell the reasons but in real it s the records which count.

Saki could not win over Overeem, in real i doubt also if even Semmy could win over him, if they got the chance to fight.

@szanpan Overeem won`t stand 2 minutes in a K-1 fight with Semmy Schilt. Semmy would make easily a pizza face out of him
Zimermann, Saki, Kyotaro, LeBanner, Gerges, Ignashov and some others would all beat Overeem
i don`t know why you think he is so unbeatable, for a roided up man, who has been KO`d more than 10 times

tell us Sam how is fighting now in Germany ? Why Germany doesnt produce good fighters nowadays for K-1 ? i think also could have nice chance

Burim no, i dont think Overeem is unbeatable of course. I have two reasons only. Staying on feet, hard head. who KOed him nowaday (except Badr)? let me say i dont know much on his MMA fights. and yes i wonder how a fight would look like Saki vs. Overeem.. also Overeem vs. Zimmerman

@burim Badr wasn`t celebrating. He was trying to grab the ropes so he wouldn`t end up on his nose. In these kind of situations referee should start counting for both fighters. The only problem is the referee didnt`t noticed that Badr was knocked down too, so he counted only for Domagoj. Watch the fight again and you will see.
h ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoR6Gq9BkLE
C heck out the replay on 1:34. That doesn`t look like celebrating to me
burim (401 posts)
Posted: 2010-06-05 at: 01:12
@stark man, Badr hit him with a JAB (you know, 10% of his power) and Domagoj hit Badr with a LEFT HOOK (which is way more powerful)

like szanpan said, We have seen alot of situations like this, where somebody is rocked and uses the ropes to reset. All Badr took to reset is 1 second and then the Celebration started. In fact, Domagoj`s questions i mentioned above started.

Hahaha all these answers are all sooo put to extreme. There all so black and white. No one seems to reason anymore or read each others post carefully and react in normal fashion. I dont know wheter to find it hilarious or sad.

Anywhoo... I read Conan81 post and I see no "hate" in it, just a fair opinion, so dont call someone a hater for a normal post.

To all who think someone is unbeatable or on the other hand who is worthless..
If youve been a fan of K1 a long time, you know things are pretty unpredictable in the K1 ring. Weve seen fighters fall who have never been knocked out, weve seen fighters get beaten by lesser opponents, weve seen fighters with good and bad days...etc

So in answer to on of the questions in this topic..
Does Saki stand a chance against Hari? Of course he has a chance, everyone has a chance. The real question is, how big is that chance? Personally I think Sakis height and size can be a problem for him in this fight, but he is very fast and has that wicked left hook counter which fits perfectly to Haris agressive charge style. So I would say that is his opportunity. Otherwise Hari will likely KO him or take a dec win. But dont say he doesnt have a chance. Thats how bad discussions and namecalling starts.

Thank you :)

@Rob i know what you mean of course, but please dont be harsh on us too much. I do not think and read whether anyone would have any doubt on the fact that Gokhan Saki is indeed a good fighter, as he is now, he has become even better.
By saying he doesnt have much of a chance against Hari and even lower chance agaist Schilt, i do not see why I or anyone else here attacking others.
Yes someones opinon is more straightaway but do not forget about the language limits and yes, about some more intense feelings over here. I do not see Conan as a Badr hater, neither a Badr fan.it would be moreover awful if we would think the same.I respect everyone s opinion and dont write to anyone that they are stupid to say this or that. I write only what i do think, with reading all the others comments with much care of course. So please dont be too hard on us even we are Badr fans we are human beings lol :)
