Super Hulk-wasted opportunity?

Or maybe not?2010 will tell...

It seems that man just carries away sometimes, like when you listen to a song and it feels like it was written just for you. That`s how i felt when I first heard of a Super Hulk tournament.

It sounded like an answer to my prayers, finally a MMA  tournament  that will bring back the old feel of the first ultimate fight championships.Chance for underdogs to shine. At first it looked just like they were going to do that, with Canseco, Sapp, Nortje, Choi, and then they introduced Mousasi?C`mon!

There is an abundance of fighters that no organization wants anymore, but they still want (or have to, like Garry Goodridge said "This is going to pay me some bills") to fight.True they cannot compete with the top dogs, but they still can put a good fight amongst themselves.UFC castaways, bancrupt Boxing stars, old MMA legends, MMA wanabees (like Ologun and Canseco), Sumo wrestlers etc.Who wouldn`t like to see Mike Tyson in action again in MMA rules?Or Tank Abott against Mark Hunt?If Dream would organize one 4-man super Hulk tournament with every event it produces, and put a substantial reward for the tournament winner I am sure that they would have to turn down some candidates because interest would be very high.

In the past, when K1 introduced characters like Bob Sapp, and Akebono opinions were divided between those who were thrilled, and those who said that such freakshows have no place in a top combat  sport like K1, but it sure helped a lot to promote a sport in those days.Dream looks like it is still struggling to find it`s place under a sun, going between ring and the octagon, number and duration of the rounds, copromoting the events, trying to please both japanese and the international market, and fanbase.Cooperating with Strikeforce is a great idea but we have yet to see some big fights as a result of that cooperation. With a tournament like Super Hulk (the name feels just right), they would once again become leaders in the game.

MMA is a sport, but if it doesn`t make money it is doomed.UFC become profitable only after the reality show "Ultimate fighter" started, sadly but true.It would be something different, something that would make people who don`t normally watch that kind of stuff interested. And keep the top fighters out of it , they make it uninteresting and predictable. Those animated characters were great idea, that should be expanded further like giving short highlight of fighters life and background, and maybe a Super Hulk video game at the end of each season.I bet that in a few years profit from the game alone would make more money than tickets and TV rights combined!Heck, throw in a fictional characters (Like that Mantaro that fought Sapp last year) if you want to, that is the right place!

By the way congratulations  to Minowaman he is a Super Hulk material.

Good good read! Enjoyed it very much. I like your enthusiasm and that's what counts when you've got something to say. That's how you sell it!

Personally I don't like technical fighter VS freak fights, but I do like freak VS freak fight...sorry can't help it haha
Of course this is based on the fact no one wants to see a great etchnical fighter lose due to some physical advantage (Hoost-Sapp) ...and on the other hand, when you think of it the term "freak" is pretty awkward haha

Again, good article :)

I like the idea of the superhulk tournament. It is entertaining, and it clears a space for fighters you don`t necessarely want to see in K-1 anymore, but you still want to see fight (some more years). I think they could start with a 16 man tournament this year, seing as the first superhulk tournament was sort of a success. With Minowaman winning I believe there is enough interest for this thing in the Japaneese audience to make it profitable. Wich fighters would be cool to see next year?
- Bring back Bob Sapp again
- Kaoklai perhaps
- Minowaman of course
- say isn`t Ray Sefo training MMA theese days?
- what about that enormous russian boxer?
Just some ideas. Anyone else got some names up their sleeves?

Maybe some of our members here could participate? I suggest Rob, Bard Rasmussen., Cnd Mongoose, K1Fan and Torazulu.

Or would it be too much of a freak-show????

Hmmm, I guess I can't back out now, right?
But I have to warn you: I'm 2,10 m and weigh 150 kg. !!!! And still move like Bruce Lee!!!

No, just kidding. I think we'd better drink a few beers together than fight eachother in front of thousands of Japanese people ....

D-rop; I`m in! I`ll drink with and fight with anybody. But maybe not on the same day, he he. Too unprofessional, and I am not made of the same stuff as the red scorpion. Alcohol makes me slow and happy, and I just want to dance.... ( I bet the japaneese audience would pay for a drunken dance-off between the members of fansofk-1)
- thanks,
you mentioned some cool names there, and I understood your english just fine ;)
