Rickard Nordstrand - The comeback!

What happens in Vegas stay's in Vegas?

Rickard Nordstrand is one of Sweden's most successful K-1 fighters of all times, he has reach the K-1 Scandinavia elimination tournament final twice, 2004 and 2006, he has participated  in the K-1 WGP final 16 and fought some of the best fighters in the business such as Remy Bonjasky, Musashi and Ruslan Karaev. The crowning of Rickard`s long and successful career was supposed to be at the K-1 WGP in Las Vegas 2007. He was by many seen as the favourite to win the tournament and this was thought to be his last fights before retirement. But things did not turn out the way that Rickard had planned, he lost the quarterfinal fight to Patrick Barry which was a hard blow for Rickard, but little did he know that the worst part was yet to come.

Rickard: This was supposed to be my last fights in K-1, I know I was the favourite to win the whole thing and I know I could have done it. The issue was that I did not have my mind in the right place, I was about to become a father for the first time and I had a hard time motivating myself. I took the fight for my fans and since I was under a contract with K-1. I hoped that my preparation where good enough, but clearly they weren't. I still feel ashamed of my performance at that event and I know I should and could have done a lot better. Loosing the fight was hard to deal with, but what happened a few weeks later can not even be compared to it.

There where no suspension, fines or explanation

According to the Nevada state athletic commission Rickard had failed the compulsory pre fight drugtest at the K-1 Event in Las Vegas. Illegal performance enhancing substances was claimed to been found in his blood and he got accused for using steroids. Rickard was fined 3000 dollar and got suspended for nine months from all sports activity. All along he has claimed to not know anything about any performance enhancing substances and that he doesn't use steroids.

Rickard: Do you know how I found out about the suspension? I read it at an internet forum. Amazing don't you think? The Nevada state athletic commission claimed that I had failed the test, but I never received any information about that from them or by FEG. I did the exact same test back in Sweden a week later and it came back clean, and I have done the test six more times since then and I have passed every single one of them. From what I have understood there where no "real" suspension since the Nevada state athletic commission doesn't follow the international guidelines. To this day I still have not received any financial fines and there has been no explanation from either the athletic commission or by FEG regarding any of this. Today I actually regret that I participated at that event, I lost so much then just the fight versus Barry.

                                                         Busy Schedule

Besides being an successful fighter, professional Ice Hockey player and a loving father Rickard also runs and owns an well known health food restaurant in one of Sweden's most exclusive and modern Health Centre's. To his overbooked schedule you can also add that he works with unprivileged and "troubled" youths making sure that they get back on their feet and receives the help and support that they need on their way back on track. Due to all of this it seemed for a long time like Rickard had hung up the gloves for good and that his fighting days indeed where over, but then something happened that made him reconsider his decisions and change his mind.

Rickard: I woke up one morning, walked in to the bathroom and as I was reaching for my toothbrush I saw the reflection of my stomach in the mirror and I did not like what I saw. No matter what angel I stood in I still saw "love handles" on the sides and there was just no way that I cover it up. This worked like a wakeup call for me. I got back to the gym, changed my diet and trained harder then ever before. During my first month back in training I lost 8!! kilo's, my stamina is better then ever and I feel both stronger and faster then before. I have decide to move back to the cruiserweight class in witch I won the IFMA World Championships  2004,  I have never really been comfortable as an heavyweight fighter and I feel that its in the cruiserweight that I fight at my optimal potential.

                                                   Return of the warrior

After being away from the fighting scene for over a year Rickard is now making his comeback at the K-1 Scandinavia Rumble Of The Kings event in Norrköping on the 27th of February, his opponent on the other side of the ring will be the WMC world champion Alex Dally from the UK. Alex is a well know and much respected Muay Thai fighter that has a habit of knocking out his opponents.

Rickard: Alex is a good fighter, I have seen some of his fights and I know that he has strong low kicks and a powerful right hand. But to me that doesn't really matter, I will fight the same way I always try to do, aggressive and looking for the KO. For those who remember the way I fought back in 2004 they can look forward to see more of that in this upcoming fight, I am sure I will win and I will give my all to do so. I would like to thank my sponsors, Svenska Bil, Flipper Marin, World Class, Hertzman and 3G, for helping me getting in shape.

FansOfK1 thanks Rickard "the pretty boy" Nordstrand for the interview and wishes him best of luck with the comeback and look forward to a new chapter in his fighting career get written.

Inside information: Rickard looked really good and motivated for this fight, never seen a fighter training that hard before. * I was exhausted after 20 min of just wathing*. My prediction is Rickard winning by KO from what I saw on his sparring and hard workout routine.

P.S: You have done a great job Daniel, the article looks really good and it was fun to read - just like it was to do the interview. =)

thanx for the comments, like always it was fun doing the interview and this time I had expert help from Kim =).

Like Kim wrote Rickard did indeed look great in training, the new smaler frame suits him well and his speed was mutch improved. I belive that his fight vs Dally will be a war and I wont be suprised if Rickard wins by KO..

It`s good both for Sweden and for us fightfans to have Rickard back in the ring, it will be fun and interesting to follow this new era of his career.

Yes. It´s a fracture in one of the small bones and take 4-6 weeks to heal up. Very sad, specially when seing Rickard train so hard with lots of motivation for this fight. Let´s hope they get a chance to fight soon...

The focus is on building a community that offers more to the users than any other K-1 website. The focus is also on that the community should be totally user driven, with the users as main writers of content. Who would for example write a better fight report than a fan who actually was at the fight? Or who could write a more interesting fighter profile than the fan who loves and really knows about a fighter?
