Predictions on the K-1 WGP Final 2008

Last year Daniel and Eldarbong predicted the WGP final with extreme precision. This year the final is harder to predict, so we called in Virgil Kalakoda to help out with the predictions. The result? Well, the experts don't agree on the winner.

It's been many years since the K-1 WGP Final has been looking as interesting as this year. Much due to the earlier elimination of Semmy Schilt, but also due to the interesting mix between K-1 legends and new comers in the line up.

Quarter finals

Peter Aerts VS Bard Hari

This is probably the most important fight of the night, but the experts don't agree on the outcome.

K-1 bad boy Badr Hari is the cocky new comer in K-1. About the fight with Aerts he said, "He cannot stand my aggression and my speed. I will knock him out!".

K-1 veteran Peter Aerts broke Semmy Schilts way to a fourth WGP title by elimating him in the Final 16. About Haris statements he comments, "Talking won't help his performance. Let's see what he is going to do in the ring.".

Daniel believes Aerts will be the winner by a R3 decision. He says that Badr has the will, and the hunger, to win. But Aerts experience and power will be the deciding factor.

Daniel: "I think that Aerts will control the fight from the start. In the first round Badr will move in circels around him and score points by lowkicking and jabbing. In the second round the "real war" will begin. The third will end after full time."

Both Virgil and Eldarbong have Badr Hari as the winner though. Eldarbong believes that they both are roughly equal fighters, but that Hari is faster.

Virgil says that this first match is the one that will determine the whole final.

Virgil: "It would be easy to say Badr, as he has age on his side and technically is a gifted fighter. But Peter rolled back the years with his brilliant performance getting the victory over Semmy. But I'll go out on a limb and pick Badr."

Errol Zimmerman VS Ewerton Teixeira

Both Zimmerman and Teixeira is relatively new in the K-1 ring. Both seem pretty confident though. After having received his position in the final Teixeira said, "I believe in myself, already at this point I believe I can become the champion".

Zimmerman eliminated Feitosa in the Final 16. After the fight he said, "I'm satisfied I kept beating him up through the entire three rounds". About the fight with Teixeira Zimmerman said, "I'm only waiting for the moment to knock him out!".

Both Daniel and Eldarbong agrees on Zimmerman as the winner in this fight. Daniel giving the fight to Zimmerman already in the first round by a KO: "Zimmermans power will be overwhelming for Texixeira. This fight will be Teixeiras first loss in K-1."

Eldarbong belives the fight to be decided by a decision: "Zimmerman by dec. Ewerton is too slow for him and can't handle the aggression."

Gokhan Saki VS Ruslan Karaev

Saki, also known as "The leg smasher" for his low kicks, are newer to K-1 than Karaev. Karaev was away from K-1 last year, but won the K-1 Asia final with all KO:s this year. He has great speed and combinations, making him really entertaining to watch. His problem is his weak chin, he's been suffering some really tough KO:s.

Daniel says that this is another hard fight to predict, but Eldarbong seems rather certain on his prediction: "Saki by KO. Kareav's chin is still suspect, and saki has way more power than him."

Daniel also gives the fight to Saki, although he finds Ruslan unpredictable and being able to surprise his opponents with crushing punches and lovely combos. But he finds Saki to be a smart and technical fighter who also is an expert at reading his opponents.

Daniel says, "I think that Saki will win this fight. If not by R3 decision, (thanks to his low kicks ) then by KO R2 or R3 with a left hook."

Remy Bonjasky VS Jerome le Banner

Le Banner has said that this very possibly is his last year in K-1 and that his focus might not be on winning the competition, but rather only winning against Bonjasky. Bonjasky on the other hand has offered to help Le Banner into his retirement...

This is probably the second most interesting fight of the night. A dream match up between two of the stongest names in K-1. Bonjasky is a two times K-1 WGP champion, and Le Banner has been fighting in the K-1 top for many years. But it's a tough fight to predict.

Daniel would prefer to see Jerome as the winner of the fight, but agrees with Eldarbong on that Remy probably is the one that will win. Eldarbong says, "JBL is too slow and not aggressive enough".

Daniels analysis is a bit more in depth, "Remy has packed on some extra kilos, which will serve him well in this fight. He will fight smart and try to stay away from Jeromes dangerous hands. After three rounds the winner shall be Remy R 3 Decision."

Semi finals

Semi final 1

The experts don't fully agree on who will be fighting this final. Both have Zimmerman in it. But Daniel says his opponent will be Aerts and Virgil and Eldarbong Hari. Let's begin with Daniels fight.

Daniels thinks that this fight all depends on how badly banged up Aerts is. Daniel says, "Aerts is a ten times better fighter then Errol, but Errol has that KO power. Also Errols way to this fight has been much easier. If Aerts can fight at 100%, I'm sure he will win this fight. But I dont think he will be at 100%..."

Daniel still believes Aerts to win the fight though. He will keep his head cool and outmaneuver Zimmerman with a rather comfortable R3 decision.

Eldarbong and Virgil also believes Zimmerman to loose the fight, but with Hari as competitor. "Hari has way more experience than errol and is faster", Eldarbong says. He gives the fight to Hari by KO.

Semi final 2

The experts have Bonjasky vs. Saki in this semi final, and both have the more experienced two times WGP champion Bonjasky as the winner.

The expert also agree on that Sakis height is an disadvantage that will affect the outcome. They say Bonjasky has a greater reach advantage and that Saki is short enough to get caught with a flying knee. Bonjasky is after all the flying Dutchman.

Daniel: "Saki will try to fight smart, Remy will be smarter. This fight will result in a rather convetional R3 decision win for Remy."

Eldarbong: "Remy by KO. Saki is not fast enough for him."

WGP Final

Will this be the most interesting fight of the year? After all it is the fight for the K-1 WGP 2008 title. It also seems to be two very interesting opponents in it.

Daniel has Aerts vs Bonjasky in the final. They met in the semi finals last year, Aerts won but Bonjasky crippled him badly. Daniels believes in Bonjasky to win the match this year though, "This will also be another hard and close fight, but this year the table will turn. Even if Aerts manages to fight all three rounds I don't think he will have the stammina and speed left to win over Remy".

Eldarbong and Virgil has Hari vs Bonjasky in the final, both believing in Hari as the K-1 WGP 2008 champion. Eldarbong shortly concludes, "Hari by decision. He wants it more and won't let Remy rob him twice".

Bet on the final

As you might have seen we've teamed up with Bwin for betting on the final. Altough not an easy prediction this year, betting some money on the winner sure will make the final even more electric.

If you are to believe our experts you could bet on both Bonjasky and Hari and still get about 2 times your invested money if one of them wins.

You can place your bets at Bwin.

Thank you for your predictions guys! Very nice reading. IMO Daniel's outcome is more probable, but nothing's really certain this year:)

I don't care who wins as long as it is aerts or hari. JLB would be nice but the last two years have been his worst ever. Old JLB would've KOed junichi in the first round of both fights... Aerts KOed him in less than 1 round I don't see why JLB couldn't do it too.

First of all, nice predictions of the Final. But I have to add I'm quit surprised to read that many think Remy can take on Aerts. Sure in their last fight Aerts was still fit, while Bonjasky had just fought Hari. But I don't think Bonjasky can handle the mental impact Aerts has on him. Remy fights with his hands next to his head, afraid of dealing out some real damage and exposing his chin. Aerts will once again read him like a book and win on dec. if they see each other in the final. Of course Aerts will have lost a lot of stamina, but his hunger is big enough to stay the agressor for three rounds straight.

Wonderful reading, and feels great that I share all your points of view here. I have the same outcome as Daniel in the first QF - I believe that Aerts will win over Hari based on his experience and extremely sneaky style, and it´s Aerts first fight of the night so he will have lots of stamina, Aerts win by dec...but Hari has proven he is a true champ and he might prove me wrong here and is ready to mess with the big boys.

I also think believe Bonjasky´s experience and mastermind will lead him to the final, most likely Aerts. I believe the winner will be Bonjasky, this time because he is the younger one, but it could as much be Aerts if his body can take three fights without injury.

To pick one winner it will Bonjasky based on experience, shin, guard and injuries. Predict this year still will be dominated by good old experience, but next year it´s probably will be the younger generation. Now I´m gonna bet some money, hehe ;-)

Im with eldarbong, that seems to be the best choice. Hari and Aerts are the gate keepers

@ "JBL is too slow and not aggressive enough". @

i also found that statement a bit werd, I think that JLB is one of the most agressvie fighters in K-1 and also has great speed in his hands. His right hand jab is lightning fast, and that left hook has been fast egnouf to KO alot of opponents.

i actually also belive thats a possible wasy for the tournament to end Cdn.. Aerts will be badly banged up after the Badr fight, and Remy might have a hard time with Errols sluggish style and power. ( good thing for me i have bet some money on Errol aswell =)
